The world’s first Czech Pilsner is headed to Japan’s Asahi Group Holdings. As part of AB-InBev’s divestment of brands due to its October 2016 takeover of SABMiller in a bid for clearance from competition regulators, the beer giant agreed to sell the Czech Republic’s Pilsner Urquell and Kozel, Poland’s Tyskie and Lecher, and Hungary’s Dreier to Asahi for 7.3 billion euros, marking the largest-ever purchase of a foreign beer operation by a Japanese brewer. The December 13 news comes several months after Asahi’s acquisition of Peroni, Grolsch and Meantime from SABMiller in April 2016 for 2.55 billion euros.
