follow As craft beer continues to grow in Japan, Kirin Holdings, the country’s second-largest beer company, announced it had acquired a stake in Brooklyn Brewery in mid-October for an undisclosed sum. In what seems more than coincidental, the 24.5% acquisition keeps Brooklyn just under the US Brewers Association’s 75%-25% threshold that it uses to define a craft brewery’s independence. Formed in 1987, Brooklyn is the 12th-largest brewery by sales volume in the US and is currently distributed by Carlsberg in Hong Kong, though time will tell if the merger changes that. Among its holdings, Kirin also owns Little Creatures (through its subsidiary Lion in Australasia) and 48% of San Miguel in the Philippines.
