Contemporary New York-style pizzeria meets local craft beer in this delicious marriage of yeast and hops. Opened by Pat Gatherer (formerly of The Globe) and the Young Master Brewery team, the Western district just keeps getting cooler and cooler.
follow While Young Master forms the core of the beer list, Alvy’s also keeps a rotation of imported seasonals and specials on its 13 taps. We start with Young Master’s crisp Contemporary Pilsner ($68 for 450ml), before moving on to New York brewery Finback’s IPA ($88); the juicy, tropical concoction helps kick our taste buds into action. If beer isn’t your thang, Alvy’s also boasts the city’s most extensive collection of American craft whiskeys, complemented by a carefully curated cocktail list.
Though the focus is pizza, we’re obsessed with the Yu Kwen Yick fried chicken ($88), served with blue cheese. Think old-school New York diner meets Hong Kong cha chaan teng; the familiar burn of Yu Kwen Yick chilli pairs delightfully with the creamy dip. For our health’s sake, we also order the Alvy’s take on the caesar salad ($98), made with fermented tofu dressing and substituting crispy wonton skin for the traditional croutons – and it’s so tasty that we order another serving. Of course, we can’t leave without indulging in one of the sourdough pizzas. Their classic a la vodka pizza ($108) is everything we ever wanted in a bite, wonderfully overflowing with pecorino cheese on a crisp, thin base.
It’s clear how much thought has been put into curating not only great beers, but also complementary dishes. The Alvy’s food menu is a one-pager – but everything we ordered hit the spot. That’s a hell yeah from us.
