What was the first beer you tried?
I remember drinking Victoria Bitter when I was a teenager – sipping my dad’s beer and enjoying it. After moving to Sydney, I found out a lot of people really hate it here and it’s not well regarded at all!
What is your favourite beer style so far?
Pale ales have definitely been my favourite. There’s something about them I just like… the fruity aromas and hint of bitterness.
What is the beer scene like in Sydney compared to Hong Kong?
There’s definitely a larger focus on good, locally brewed beer in bars in Sydney compared to Hong Kong. Australians really love their beer, and it shows in the variety of craft beers and specialty beer bars that there are.
Are there any differences in drinking habits between both cities?
Too many to list, but one of the main ones is simply that the drinking culture in Hong Kong is way safer. You actually have to be careful in Sydney, as excessive drinking within certain groups has led to major issues such as the lockout laws in the central business district. I’ve never felt unsafe in Hong Kong.
